I must have seen this picture from the Carnivals a million times. From left to right it is me, my cousin Leti, my brother David and my other cousin Joselito. But it wasn’t until 18 months ago in a skype conversation with my mom that I realized what it really meant.

I am a Spanish policeman. Leti is Carmen Ward. My brother is a British bobby and Joselito is a Civil Guard. My brother and I are exchaning flags.

40 days before Spain had reopened the Gate of Gibraltar, ending 13 shameful years of blockade and separation of mixed families…

My mom kept telling me how she hand made every single detail of those costumes but I couldn’t listen anymore… I had a story to tell.
